Jade Mountain or Yushan (玉山) is situated in the Yushan National Park (玉山國家公園) in the Republic of China on Taiwan. Yu Shan is also one of East Asia's highest peaks at 3,997 meters (13,114 feet) in height above sea level and the highest point on Taiwan.
Jade Mountain was first called 'Mount Morrison', when W.Morrison, the captain of American freighter USS Alexander, mentioned this mountain in his naval log after the ship's departure from Anping harbor (the old harbor of nowaday Tainan) in 1857. This became the first literature note of Jade Mountain in western history, hence the name 'Mount Morrison'.
The Japanese called the mountain Niitakayama and during World War II, it was the highest point in the Japanese Empire. The signal to the Japanese fleet to attack Pearl Harbor was niitakayama nobore 1208 ("climb Mount Niitaka on 12/08").
