Jagir - Definition and Overview

A Jagir is a (small) region given by an ruler or king to a army chieftain (called a sardar in Marathi language, someone who leads a group of troops) as a reconisation of his services. The owner of the jagir was in effect the ruler of that region and substantial income that was earned (taxes etc) from this region went to the owner to maintain his family and his troops.
