James Chuter Ede - Definition

James Chuter Ede, Baron Chuter-Ede was a British politician, born in Epsom, Surrey. He studied at Cambridge University and worked as a teacher (1905-1914) and a local councillor (1920-1927). He entered Parliament in 1923. He was Home Secretary in the 1945 Labour government, and Leader of the House of Commons in 1951. He was closely involved in the drafting of the Butler Education Act and the Criminal Justice Act of 1948. He became a life peer in later years.
