Jamnagar Jamnagar

Jamnagar - Definition and Overview

Jamnagar is the western most district of India. It has a long coastline along the Arabian Sea. It is located on the banks of Nagmati and Panchmati river (although most of the year, they are dry because of consecutive famines). It has recently shot to prominence because of Reliance Industries establishing one of the world's largest petroleum refinery there. Population of Jamnagar is about 5 lacs.

Jamnagar is well-known for its ancient marbled-carved jain temples. It is also well-known because of very famous cricketers that came from this city - like RanjitSingh, Ajay Jadeja and others. During the British rule, Ranjit Singh used to be the king of Jamnagar and the Ranjit Trophy (domestic tournament) has been named after him.

The only marine sanctuary in India is located near Jamnagar - on the islands of Pirotan.
