Japan Transocean Air - Definition and Overview

Japan Transocean Air (日本トランスオーシャン航空 Nihon Toransuōshan Kōkū or JTA) is an airline subsidiary of Japan Airlines. It is headquartered in Naha, Okinawa prefecture, and specializes in services to smaller airports in the Ryukyu Islands. The airline was originally known as Southwest Air Lines (南西航空 Nansei Kōkū), and flew Convair 240s until the new capital infusion from JAL allowed it to upgrade to NAMC YS-11s, and eventually Boeing 737s.

JTA occasionally lends aircraft to JAL in the event of equipment failure.

The airline's radio callsign is "Jal Ocean." Its IATA airline code is NU.
