The etymology of the slang term jape:

Jape is a slang term originating from the southwest suburbs of illinois where the term (also slang) "jap" (alt. spell "japp") was modified into the word jape. The reason of the modification was only due to a typo while one student was flaming a friend on aol instant messenger. The use of the term spread partly becuase the term jap was found offensive by some.

The words "jap" and "jape" can be used together as differing extremes of "japping". For example, if someone makes a small diss, the term jap would be used, and jape would be used in cases of a diss that is extremely clever or just very funny. Or you can just use the terms as you wish.
