Japonski Island - Definition

Japonski Island is a small island in the Alexander Archipelago in southeastern Alaska across the Sitka Strait from Sitka. It is connected to Sitka by the O'Connell Bridge. Japonski Island is the location of the Sitka Airport and the Sitka extension of the University of Alaska.

Japonski is Russian for "Japanese." The Russians named it that after some Japanese fishermen who where stranded there in the 1800s.
