Jason Newsted (born March 4, 1963) is best known as the former bassist of the heavy metal band Metallica.
Prior to joining Metallica, Jason played bass for Flotsam and Jetsam.
He joined the band in 1986 after the death of the band's original bassist, Cliff Burton. He appeared on the albums ...And Justice for All, Metallica, Load, and Reload. Over his 13 year tenure he was never accepted as an equal to his predecessor by the band.
He left Metallica in January 2001. He joined the Canadian metal band Voivod in 2002.
In 2003 Metallica picked Ozzy Osbourne's bass player Robert Trujillo as Newsted's replacement. Almost immediately Ozzy choose Jason to replace Rob for Ozzfest 2003. Following the end of Ozzfest Jason left Ozzy's band to concentrate on his work with Voivod.
