History

The regiment has its origin in the Angermannia, Medelpadia and Jemtia Regiment raised in 1646 in the newly conquered province Jemtia, although the men were mostly recruited in the old Swedish provinces Angermannia and Medelpadia. The regiment was also called Thomas Gärffelt's Regiment after the first commander.

The regiment was disbanded in 1661 as the recruitment provinces where transferred to the navy. But some companies of the regiment did remain as garrison units in Pommerania until 1670, when they where incorporated in the newly raised Jemtia Foot Regiment (or Anders Planting's Regiment). From 1689 on, the regiment was named Jemtia Dragoon Regiment, but had only one company of cavalry troops. This company was later organized into Norrland Dragoon Regiment.

The regiment took part in most campaigns and wars until it was almost completely destroyed when marshing over the Norwegian mountains in 1718-1719, as 600 men froze to death and another 500 was seriously wounded or ill. It was renamed Jemtia Infantry Regiment in 1770 before gaining the present name in 1820. The regiment also had the name Jemtia Field Ranger Corps a short period between 1853 and 1892.

Jemtia Field Ranger Regiment, was given the designation I 23, 23rd Infantry Regiment) after a general order in 1816. This was changed to I 5 1927. For a short time in the 1990s, the unit was merged with the wartime organized Field Ranger Brigade before being reorganized in 2000 back to Jemtia Field Ranger Regiment.
