Jim Beam is a brand of bourbon whiskey, distilled in Clermont, Kentucky. The whiskey has been distilled since 1795, founded by Jacob Beam. Several types of Jim Beam, more commonly known as Beam, are available:

  • White label (Aged 3 years, 80 proof)
  • Green label (Aged 5 years, 80 proof, "Jim Beam's Choice")
  • Black label (Aged 8 years, 86 proof)
  • Yellow label (Rye bourbon, aged 4 years, 80 proof)

The flagship black label bourbon is aged longer in oak barrels, and is bottled at a higher proof than standard white label fare.

Brewed in the United States of America, in the the state of Kentucky, in the county of Bourbon, it is touted as the best-selling bourbon in the world. Though second in sales to Jack Daniel's brand whiskey, Jack Daniel's does not qualify as "bourbon", and therefore is excluded.

Similar in taste to Jack Daniel's, Jim Beam retails for a more affordable price, thus targeting the low income and younger markets. Proponents argue that Jim Beam is easier to drink than other spirits due to its pleasant taste and lack of noticeable burn on the back of one's throat. Jim Beam is also known as JB, not to be confused with JD, and smells pleasantly like cinnamon. JB is aged in American oak barrels.

A detailed history of Jim Beam can be found in F. Paul Pacult's book American Still Life : The Jim Beam Story and the Making of the World's #1 Bourbon.
