Joseph Stillwell Cain (Joe Cain) is largely credited for the rebirth of Mardi Gras in Mobile, Alabama. In 1866, following the Civil War and while Mobile was still under Union occupation, Joe cain led a group of revelers in a parade through the city, using a "borrowed" coal wagon and dressed in improvised costumes depicting a legendary Chickasaw chief named Slacabamorinico. The choice was a backhanded insult to the Union forces as that the Chickasaw had never surrendered. Joe Cain is currently buried at Church Street Cemetary in Mobile, Alabama. His grave is visited once a year by his band of "Merry Widows" as part of the celebration of Mardi Gras.
