John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk
John Mowbray, 4th Duke of Norfolk was born in 1444 and died in 1476. He was the son of John Mowbray, 3rd Duke of Norfolk.
He had only one child, Anne Mowbray and so the dukedom became extinct upon his death. Anne was only 3 years old when her father died. She then inherited his extensive lands and wealth.
Edward IV arranged for her to be married, at the age of 5 to his son, Richard, Duke of York.
Anne died in 1481 before she reached her ninth birthday. Under the agreement brokered by his father, Richard inherited the Mowbray lands and wealth.
The first creation of the title of Duke of Norfolk therefore became extinct in 1476 but was revived in a second creation for Richard, Duke of York in 1481
In 1483 the title was revived for its third and current creation when John Howard, 1st Duke of Norfolk was ennobled.
