John Sasso - Definition

John Sasso is an American Democrat political operative, born in Massachusetts.

He began his political career as an organizer for Congressman Gerry Studds, and gained note as an organizer in the 1980 Iowa primaries for Ted Kennedy. He has worked closely over the years with Joe Trippi and Susan Estrich.

Having worked for Michael Dukakis while running for Massachusetts Governor, Sasso served as his Chief of Staff from 1983 to 1987; Dukakis then appointed him as campaign manager for his presidential bid, after Sasso persuaded the governor that he could win nationally. During the primaries, Sasso was implicated in the distribution of a videotape showing similarities between a speech by Sen. Joseph Biden and British politician Neil Kinnock, leading to his resignation from the Dukakis campaign; he returned to the campaign after the nomination.

In 2004 John Kerry brought Sasso in as general manager of his presidential campaign. Recently Sasso had worked for the Democratic National Committee.

Unusually for modern politics, Sasso avoids interviews and works behind the scenes exclusively.
