John Sheppard - Definition and Overview

John Sheppard (around 15151559 or 1560) was an English composer and organist.

He was choirmaster at Magdalen College, Oxford from 15431548, and was a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal by no later than 1552.

His works, which are typically richly polyphonic, include motets, two Magnificats, five masses, including one based on the song " The Western Wynde" (also the basis of masses by John Taverner and Christopher Tye), and works in English for Anglican services.
