Juan Raul Davis Rodriguez is a country music singer from Uvalde, Texas, better known by the nickmane Johnny Rodriguez. He was born December 5, 1952.
At the age of 18, Rodriguez was arrested by Texas Rangers for the theft of a goat. According to Rodriguez, he took the fall for his friends and spent 4 months in a Texas prison. While serving time, his singing got him noticed, especially by one corrections officer who knew an events promoter in San Antonio, Texas.
This promoter hired Rodriguez, who then spent his days performing in a "Wild West" show as a cowboy, gunfighter, and singer.
While attending one of his shows, country music legends Bobby Bare and Tom T. Hall heard the young man, and took him under their wing to get him into the recording industry.
Rodriguez eventually signed a record contract, and had 2 hits, "Ridin' my Thumb to Mexico" and "Just Get Up and Close the Door".
Troubles with drug and alcohol abuse have landed him in trouble numberous times, including a murder indictment in 2003 (he was acquitted in 2004), and recent drunk driving arrest.
Rodriguez continues to travel and perform.
