He defeated the previous mayor of São Paulo, Marta Suplicy.
Prior to being mayor, he lost the election to Lula.
Prior to that, he was Minister of Health. His administration was marked by a substancial success in fighting AIDS, specially with the usage generic drugs that made the treatment cheaper. His efforts were recognised by the United Nations, and his tactics were adopted by a number of other developing nations.
