Judith Mossman (Half-Life 2) - Definition and Overview

Judith Mossman is a fictional character in the first-person shooter computer game Half-Life 2 (2004), sequel to Half-Life (1998). Judith is portrayed as a 30-something woman working in a hidden research facility Black Mesa East under guide of Dr. Eli Vance, whom she appreciates greatly. Judith's voice is that of actress Michelle Forbes.

Dr. Mossman first appears in the Black Mesa East episode, where she meets Gordon Freeman at the entrance to facility and tells him of the research that is going down there. She then is seen quarreling with Alyx Vance, Eli's daughter. Dr. Mossman disapproves of Alyx's light-hearted approach to the science (for instance, calling a Zero Point Energy Field Manipulator simply a Gravity Gun and thinking of it as a funny toy). It is clearly seen that the two women dislike each other.

Well, Alyx's dislike is proven very well-founded when in Entanglement episode it turns out that Judith in fact has betrayed the resistance and given away the location of Black Mesa East, allowing the Combine to sweep the area and take Dr. Vance prisoner. As she explains, she did this because she wanted Eli to be safe - and he wouldn't be safe if the Combine was hunting him, so the only solution for him was to surrender or to be taken prisoner. Alyx and Gordon manage to capture Judith. They need her alive, as they plan to rescue Dr. Vance via a Combine teleport, and Judith is the one who knows how to handle it. Dr. Mossman starts the machine (it takes time to charge up), everything seems to go as planned, but suddenly the area is flooded with Combine soldiers and, while Alyx and Gordon are busy holding them out, Judith climbs into teleport with Dr. Vance and they vanish. Moreover, it soon turns out that Dr. Mossman has entered wrong endpoint coordinates - instead of safe Dr. Kleiner's lab she has sent Eli and herself to the impregnable Citadel, heart of the Combine. Alyx and Gordon barely manage to escape the overwhelming Combine forces coming through the same teleport, this time to Dr. Kleiner, one moment before the teleport explodes.

However, as all the facts point out that Dr. Judith Mossman is a "bad character", in the crucial scene of Our Benefactors episode she suddenly changes allegiance, attacking Dr. Breen with an EMP (small electrical device usually used to open doors or hack in computers) and freeing Dr. Vance, Alyx and Gordon, as they all are captured by that time. It turns out that Judith's initial plan was to get close to Dr. Breen so that she could stop him; and the only way of doing that was to play a traitor. At last, the two women finally make peace, as Judith stays with Eli to guard him while Alyx follows Freeman in his quest to stop fleeing Dr. Breen.

Dr. Mossman is never seen again in Half-Life 2 and her further fate is unknown.
