Jumble - Definition and Overview |
Jumble, is the name of a word puzzle where you are given a set of letters which when arranged in the correct order give the un-jumbled word. A simple example would be the set of letters "lbujme" which can then be ordered to spell "jumble". These puzzles are found in newspapers, and have four base jumbles. Once these base jumbles are solved, one can then use certain letters of each base jumble to obtain a new set of letters. This set of letters will then complete a phrase, or sentence, possibly involving more than one word. The correct answer usually involves some sort of pun, relating to the caption beside the jumble.
The Jumble can be seen as a smaller problem when playing Scrabble. In Scrabble you have seven letter tiles, and can use these tiles to create words on the playing surface. Since you can create words of any length, as long as the playing surface allows it, and do not have to use all of your tiles, playing Scrabble is tougher then solving the jumble.
One website which allows you to play the jumble online is Jumble Online (http://www.jumble.com/). There are Jumble solvers available, one of them being Jumble Solver (http://www.jumble.org/).
