Juniata County is a county located in the state of Pennsylvania. As of 2000, the population is 22,821. Its county seat is Mifflintown6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,019 km² (394 mi²). 1,014 km² (392 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.50% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,821 people, 8,584 households, and 6,463 families residing in the county. The population density is 22/km² (58/mi²). There are 10,031 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (26/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.05% White, 0.37% Black or African American, 0.14% Native American, 0.25% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.50% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.62% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 8,584 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 64.60% are married couples living together, 6.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.70% are non-families. 21.10% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.60 and the average family size is 3.01.

In the county, the population is spread out with 25.00% under the age of 18, 8.00% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 99.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.40 males.
