K-os - Definition and Overview

Kheaven Brereton (born February 20, 1972 in Port of Spain, Trinidad) is a Canadian musician from Toronto, Ontario who records and performs as K-Os. His music is frequently compared to Lauryn Hill because of his "rare ability to harmonize and emcee." His stage name is pronounced "chaos", and is an acronym for "knowledge of self."

In 2003, K-Os was nominated for a Juno Award in both Rap Recording of the Year, and New Artist of the Year categories, and managed to pick up an "International Album of the Year" at the Source Awards. The following year, Don Allen was nominated in the Video of the Year category for his work on the "Heaven Only Knows" video. His 2004 album, Joyful Rebellion, had the highest chart debut for a hip hop album in the history of the Canadian record charts.

His music, impossible to consign to a specific genre, is a colourful mix of hip hop, rock, pop, jazz and reggae music. Unlike most other hip hop artists, live musicians accompany K-Os during his live shows. The multi-talented K-Os has even played the guitar and piano for a few of his own songs.
