KCAL - Definition and Overview

KCAL9 is a local independent television station in Los Angeles, California, USA. It is owned by Viacom. It was previously owned by Young Broadcasting, Inc. Channel 9 began as KFI-TV October 1948 later became KHJ-TV from 1951–1989. The Walt Disney Company acquired it in 1989 and it became known as KCAL-TV. In 1995, Disney acquired Capital Cities/ABC and with it KABC Channel 7, and was required by regulators to divest itself of KCAL, which passed to Young.

  • Young Broadcasting, Inc. (1995-2002)
  • Walt Disney Company (1989-1995)
  • RKO/General, Inc. 1965-1989
