KCRW (89.9 FM) is a free-form public radio station broadcasting from the campus of Santa Monica College in Santa Monica, California. It is also the flagship station of National Public Radio (NPR) on the west coast.
KCRW was founded as the College Radio Workshop in 1945 to train servicemen returning from World War II in broadcasting. Ruth Seymour (Hirschman) became general manager in the 1970s and together with longtime music director Tom Schnabel developed a mix of music, news, and other spoken-word programming that now attracts over 450,000 listeners each week. The station airs programs from NPR, Public Radio International (PRI), and the BBC, along with its own mixture of eclectic music selections and frequent live in-studio performances by new and emerging talent, human interest programs, news magazine segments, political commentary and debate. Locally produced programs include Morning Becomes Eclectic, To the Point, The Treatment, Left, Right, and Center, and Harry Shearer's Le Show. Music host Nic Harcourt is well-known among many public radio fans.
The station's signal covers Los Angeles and has become very influential in the music industry because many music executives tune in each day. KCRW has been credited with discovering or promoting many artists, including Norah Jones.
