KING is a television station in Seattle, Washington, affiliated with the NBC network, that broadcasts on analog VHF channel 5 and digital UHF channel 48. Its offices and broadcasting center are located just east of Seattle Center.
When KING came on the air for the first time in November 1948, it became the first television station north of San Francisco and west of the Mississippi River. In the late 1990s, KING added under its broadcasting umbrella two new local sister stations: NorthWest Cable News, cable channel 2, and KONG, UHF channel 16.
The KING news slogan is "Coverage You Can Count On".
KING is most noted outside its broadcasting area for launching the news anchor career of Aaron Brown of CNN.
For decades it was operated by King Broadcasting Company, along with the KING-AM 1090 and KING-FM 98.1 radio stations. In 1992 most of the assets of King Broadcasting were sold; KING-AM is now owned by Infinity Broadcasting, which in turn is now owned by media conglomerate Viacom, with new call letters KYCW. KING-TV is currently owned by another large media company, the Belo Corporation. KING-FM was donated to a non-profit partnership of the Seattle Symphony, the Seattle Opera, and ArtsFund. It currently has a classical music radio format.
