KYW Channel 3 is the CBS Television affiliate serving the Philadelphia area, owned by Viacom with transmitter in Roxborough. Channel 3 has a checkered history. Channel 3 was signed on the air in 1946 under the call letters WPTZ, owned by Philco and affiliated with NBC. Westinghouse purchased WPTZ later on. NBC wanted to own a station in Philadelphia, so they requested that KYW trade ownership with them for Cleveland's WNBK. NBC threatened to pull NBC affiliation from all of Westinghouse's station if the trade was not accepted, so in 1957, NBC became the owners of Channel 3, changing the call letters to WRCV. Westinghouse had gone to the FCC, telling them of how NBC blackmailed them into the trade, so in 1965, they ordered NBC to trade back. Westinghouse quickly changed the Philadelphia call letters of the radio and Television property to KYW (call letters Westinghouse was using in Cleveland during the time). Although the station was owned by Westinghouse, they looked like an NBC owned station.
In 1994, Westinghouse merged with CBS, and under the agreement, all Westinghouse owned stations would become CBS affiliates. Due to this, CBS had to sell WCAU 10. NBC purchased 10, and on September 11, 1995, Channels 3 and 10 switched network affiliations. KYW is co-owned with WPSG 57 and shares the same building with the UPN affiliate.
