K Kamaraj - Definition

Kamaraj (full name Kamarajar) came from a very poor family and became the Cheif minister of Tamilnadu. He was a freedom fighter and was a close ally of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. He also played a big role in bringing Indira Gandhi as the Prime minister of India, when he was serving as the Congress Party president. As chief minister of Tamilnadu, he introduced many innovative schemes including the "Mid-day meal" scheme, which was later popularised by M G Ramachandiran and this scheme is considered by the Government of India to be introduced in all public schools in the country. His government built all the existing dams in Tamilnadu. He is known for his honesty, integrity and simplicity. He denied any special treatments extended to him or his mother just because he was the chief minister (he removed a hand pump from his home because it was installed in his house just after he became cheif minister). He was a poor man when he died. He never married.
