Kaine Kaine

Kaine - Definition and Overview

Kaine is a Marvel Comics supervillan. He is one of the first "failed" clones of Peter Parker--Spider-Man, created by Professor Miles Warren.

Storyline

Professor Warren discarded Kaine because the clone started showing early signs of the degeneration process, and Kaine experienced a strong feeling of rejection similar to that between a father and son. Kaine left Professor Warren and realized the partial degeneration also caused an amplification of the powers he "inherited" from Peter. Not only had his strength, speed, and agility been heightened beyond Peter's, but he gained a "precognitive sense" that shows him flashes of the future (an amplified version of Peter's spider-sense).

Kaine stuck around Professor Warren's laboratory--secretly--long enough to witness a successful clone being created. The clone would later call himself Ben Reilly--the Scarlet Spider. Kaine hated Ben for being better in Professor Warren's eyes and vowed to never let this clone interfere with Peter's life.

After fighting Peter and losing, Ben was believed to be dead. He, instead, escaped and moved out west, dejected with the feelings of being a fake. Still filled with hatred, Kaine followed Ben and sought to destroy his life by committing a number of murders in which Ben would be blamed (Kaine and Ben had the same fingerprints). Kaine's plan backfired, however, when Ben made an unexpected trip to New York after hearing of Aunt May's sickness. The authorities who had been hunting Ben mistakenly sought Peter for the crimes.
