Map of Kalimdor as it appears in the game World of Warcraft
Kalimdor is a large landmass in the World of Azeroth, in the fictional Warcraft Universe that is the setting of the Warcraft franchise of computer games by Blizzard Entertainment, and spinoffs of it in form of a board game, action figures, and several pocket books.
History
Long ago, Azeroth consisted only of a massive continent, surrounded by a seemingly endless ocean. This landmass was called Kalimdor, meaning "the land of eternal starlight", by the Night Elves, a nocturnal humanoid race that inhabited it. At the rough geographical center of the landmass stood the Well of Eternity, crafted by the Titans, the creators of Azeroth. Night Elves were lured to the Well of Eternity by its potent magical energies, and eventually settled along its shores. Eventually, elves of noble birth, called the Highborne, including Night Elf queen Azshara, began to study the powers of the Well. Over time, they dwelt too deeply into the arts of magic, and triggered a huge invasion of demons from the plane that interconnects the worlds in the universe, the Twisting Nether. After an epic battle between the demonic Burning Legion and the Night Elves, the Night Elves, against all odds, defeated the Burning Legion, but the Portal at the bottom of the Well buckled upon itself, triggering a cataclysmic explosion. The massive crater was filled by the sea, leveling whatever remained standing after the explosion. Many inhabitants of Azeroth perished, including thousands of Night Elves, but the survivors managed to drift ashore on debris, to the westernmost one of four pieces of the former supercontinent survived the flood. Since Night Elves were not aware of the other "survivor" continents, they kept the name "Kalimdor" for their new homeland.
Geography
Kalimdor's geography is incredibly diverse, ranging from the temperate forests of Ashenvale, through the arid savanna of the Barrens, all the way to the lush tropical rainforest of the Un'Goro crater.

Teldrassil
An ancient, massive tree that is home to the Night Elves. Created by mages, it's roots run to the newer Well of Eternity. Malfurion Stormrage warned that nature would never bless it, but the mages continued anyway. Teldrassil contains Darnassus.
Darkshore
The major city in Darkshore is Auberdine, a small fishing village with boat routes to Theramore and Menethil Harbor. Darkshore also contains the ruins of Ameth'Aran, which have been overrun by the undead Highborne and Bashal'Aran, which is overrun by satyr and gremlins. Most of the quests in the area revolve around various sicknesses that plague the beasts in the area, making them hostile.

Mulgore
The green plains of Mulgore represent one of the most peaceful lush areas of the game. Tucked into a valley below the StoneTalon mountains, Mulgore is protected from raids by high mountains. The only way into Mulgore is through a passageway to the east. Mulgore is the land of the Tauren, where there are many smaller creatures to help players advance through the first 10 levels or so. After that the next step is to advance into the Barrens and quest at the Crossroads. Mulgore is the home to the Tauren city of Thunder Bluff. The green plains of Mulgore are always a welcome sight after days of questing in the dusty Barrens.
