Kaplan - Definition and Overview

Kaplan Inc. is a multinational private education company. Kaplan is a large subsidiary of the Washington Post Company and has now surpassed The Washington Post itself in terms of revenue. Headquartered in New York City, Kaplan operates primarily in the United States but also conducts business both online and via specialized Kaplan centers throughout the world.

Subdivisions

Kaplan Test Preparation & Admissions is the largest subdivision of Kaplan, and sells test preparation designed to help students earn higher scores on standardized tests. Kaplan offers both individual tutoring and highly standardized classes to prepare students for all sorts of standardized tests, particularly college admissions tests like the SAT and ACT as well as graduate school tests like the LSAT, GMAT, MCAT, and GRE.

Courses are taught in a uniform, modular manner throughout the entire country. A student enrolled in a course can take each lesson anywhere a class is being taught, and classes can also be taken online or by viewing recorded videos. Kaplan courses are typically taught at special Kaplan centers, although they are frequently offered in more convenient locations such as schools and community centers.

Kaplan Professional offers professional education for licensing, certification, and training purposes. Areas of education include real estate, financial services, architecture, and others.

Kaplan Higher Education is a group of institutions that offer fixed-facility and online certificate and degree programs in fields such as criminal justice, healthcare, business, information technology and legal studies. Each of the individual schools in the division is separately accredited by one of several national or regional accrediting agencies approved by the U.S. Department of Education. The unit includes the fixed-facility colleges that were formerly part of Quest Education as well as online post-secondary and career schools.
