Kaw City is a city located in Kay County, Oklahoma. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 372.

Kaw City is near Kaw Lake and tourism is the major industry. There are many restaurants, a hotel and a marina. The town has many retiries and part time residents who take advantage of the recreational opportunities and the appealing natural landscape.

The headquarters of the Kaw Nation of Oklahoma is located in Kaw City.

The current mayor is Wilva "Willie" Martin.

Geography

Kaw City is located at 36°45'57" North, 96°51'29" West (36.765842, -96.858035)¹.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.3 km² (5.5 mi²). 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²) of it is land and 7.4 km² (2.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 51.26% water.

Demographics

As of the census² of 2000, there are 372 people, 159 households, and 109 families residing in the city. The population density is 53.2/km² (137.9/mi²). There are 210 housing units at an average density of 30.0/km² (77.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 77.96% White, 0.27% African American, 20.16% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.54% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 3.23% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 159 households out of which 27.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.2% are married couples living together, 14.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.4% are non-families. 25.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.82.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 25.8% from 45 to 64, and 18.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 74.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 82.6 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $26,146, and the median income for a family is $31,042. Males have a median income of $30,000 versus $17,917 for females. The per capita income for the city is $15,091. 12.7% of the population and 9.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 16.5% of those under the age of 18 and 21.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
