Ken Boyer - Definition and Overview

Kenton Lloyd Boyer (May 20, 1931 - September 7, 1982) was an American third baseman and manager in Major League Baseball, primarily with the St. Louis Cardinals. His brother Clete was also a third baseman with the New York Yankees, and another brother, Cloyd, was a major league pitcher; three other brothers also played in the minor leagues.

Born in Liberty, Missouri, Ken Boyer was an outstanding player both on offense and defense, hitting 282 career home runs while also winning five Gold Glove awards. A 7-time All-Star, he was named the National League's MVP in 1964 after leading the league in RBIs.

Named the Cardinals' manager early in the 1978 season, he continued in that position until early 1980, posting a 166-190 record.

Boyer died of lung cancer in St. Louis at age 51.
