Khabarovsk Khabarovsk

Khabarovsk - Definition and Overview

Khabarovsk (Хабаровск) (population 582,700) is the capital city of the Khabarovsk Krai, Russia, some 30 km from the Chinese border. In Chinese, the city is also known as Bуlм (伯力)

Khabarovsk was founded in 1858 as a military outpost Khabarovka (named after a Russian explorer Yerofey Khabarov). It lies at the confluence of the rivers Amur and Ussuri, about 800 km (500 mi) north of Vladivostok and is accessible from there by an overnight train running along the Trans-Siberian railway; rail distance from Moscow is 8523 km.

The city of Khabarovsk while agreed upon by most people to be the most picturesque city in the Russian Far East, is much underrated as a center of history, culture, art, fashion, music and theatre. Most people spend a day and visit the most likely landmarks, such as the Natural History Museum and walk the broad Amursky Boulevard with its many vibrant shops and visit perhaps the interesting local market.

What is emerging in Khabarovsk, is what always was meant to be, an international trading center bringing a variety of cultures together. A city with a vibrant historic past which still can be observed in its older buildings. To experience Khabarovsk in its fullest measure, one must go beyond what is evident.

Some islands on the Amur near city have been an object of a boundary dispute between China and Russia.
