The King Wen sequence of the I Ching is a series of sixty four broken and unbroken lines, each representing yin and yang: the feminine and masculine, the dark and light, the receptive and creative forces of nature.

The King Wen is traditionally considered the second–oldest formal arrangement of the hexagrams, preceded only by the Fu Hsi. The historical legend is that King Wen designed this sequence in 1143 BC while imprisoned by the tyrant Chou Shin.

There have been many attempts to find an underlying mathematical structure in this pattern.
