Kira Yamato is the protagonist of the television anime series Gundam Seed. The story was at first set in Heliopolis, the place where Kira and his friends studied before joining the war between the Earth Alliance and the Zodiac Alliance of Freedom Treaty. Kira became the reluctant pilot of the GAT-X105 Strike Gundam and joined OMNI Enforcer (the military force of the Earth Alliance) soon after, following the crew of the battleship, Archangel, in the fight against ZAFT.
In his first major engagement (PHASE-05 Phase Shift Down), Kira fires his weapons too recklessly and burns down the Strike Gundam's energy battery; he is saved from certain destruction by mere moments with an emergency connection to the AQM/E-X03 Launcher Striker to restore its charge. After this incident, he is far more cautious about using the Strike Gundam's weaponry.
As this war is mainly caused by the rivalry between the Naturals and the Coordinators, Kira had to bear discrimination from the Earth Alliance when it was made known that he was a coordinator himself. Later he learnt that he was actually the Ultimate Coordinator, which means when he was a fetus, he was developed outside his mother's womb, using some apparatus in turn to develop him. He was the first and the last fetus to be successfully developed using the apparatus (although other "failed" examples, most notably Canard Pars, were successfully birthed). Kira was until the Bloody Valentine War unaware of the existence of his twin sister, Cagalli Yula Athha.
He was a good friend of Athrun Zala, unfortunately, Athrun was a pilot of ZAFT, who stole the GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam during the battle in Heliopolis. Being good friends, it was always hard to fight with each other whenever they met each other in a battle. Athrun always asked Kira why he joined the Earth Alliance despite being a Coordinator, and Kira's answer was always the same, which was to protect his friends in the Archangel.
Later Kira, Athrun, Lacus Clyne, the entire crew of Archangel (except Lt. Badgiruel), Cagalli, and many others left Earth Alliance and ZAFT to form another army of their own to stop the meaningless war between the Naturals and the Coordinators after the destruction of Orb.
From January 25, CE 71 to its destruction in June, Kira pilots the first GAT-X105 Strike Gundam in combat, afterward he pilots the ZGMF-X10A Freedom Gundam until the end of the war in September.
After the war (Gundam Seed Destiny), Kira and Lacus move to the orphanage which a friend of the Clyne family, Reverend Malchio, runs, and remain there until an attack by Coordinator assassins during the fall of Junius 7 in CE 73, which destroyed the orphanage. Kira launches in the Freedom Gundam to defeat the attackers.
In the last episode of Gundam Seed, Kira appears to have some kind of sensitive power, like Mu La Flaga and Rau Le Creuset. When Flay Allster is killed and Kira talks with her after her death, the scene is reminicint of when Lalah Sune is killed by Amuro Ray in the original Mobile Suit Gundam series.
