History

Knox College was originally established as a Presbyterian seminary for men in 1909. It now admits students for all subjects but still is affiliated to the Presbyterian Church. It become co-educational in 1983.

The seminary itself is now the Knox College School of Ministry.

The present buildings of the College were designed by the notable architect W. Gray Young when he was only 21 years old.

Unlike the other Otago halls of residence Knox (along with Selwyn College, Otago) operates a true collegiate structure with a master and fellows who offer tutorials in the Oxbridge sense. As a result it is very popular among new students to Otago.

The visitor to the College is the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand.

The College is incorporated as The Council of Knox College and Salmond Hall, reflecting the College's governance of the nearby Salmond Hall which is (at least legally) an auxiliary of Knox.
