Kofu - Definition and Overview

Kōfu, or Koufu (甲府市; -shi) is the capital city of Yamanashi, Japan.

As of 2003, the city has an estimated population of 194,837 and the density of 1,133.56 persons per km². The total area is 171.88 km².

The city was founded on July 1, 1889. Its name means "capital of Kai Province." During the Sengoku period, it was the stronghold of Takeda Shingen.
