Kurwai - Definition and Overview

Kurwai is a former princely state of British India, in what is now Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh state of central India. The state was founded in 1730 by Mohammed Dalal Khan, who established himself as Nawab. Kurwai came under British sovereignty in the early nineteenth century. The state was 368 sq km, and had a population of 24,631 in 1892. His descendants ruled the state until June 15 1948, when the Nawab acceded to the Indian Government. Kurwai became part of the newly-created state of Madhya Bharat, and was added to Vidisha District. Madhya Bharat was merged into Madhya Pradesh on November 1, 1956.
