Kwin - Definition and Overview

In Unix computing, Kwin is a window manager for the X Window System. It is an integral part of the K Desktop Environment (KDE), although it can be used on its own or with other desktop environments.

The first version of KDE window manager was part of KDE 1 and was known as kwm.

Kwin 2

The second version of Kwin was introduced in KDE 2.0. Its most notable improvements over the first version were extended support for themes and window effects.

Kwin 3

The latest version of Kwin was introduced in KDE 3.2 and has improved support for the extended ICCCM standards from freedesktop.org.

Look and feel

There are myriad themes for Kwin, including the default Keramik, Microsoft Windows-like Redmond, and Plastik. IceWM themes can also be used with it.
