La Giovine Italia was a political movement founded in 1831 by Giuseppe Mazzini. The goal of this movement was to create a united Italian republic. The Italian leaders and their people took up the call and began to rebel against their Austrian overlords. However, Mazzini was unable to reach his goal as counterrevolutionary forces (mainly Pope Pius IX) began to regain control with the aid of France.
