La Grande, Oregon - Definition and Overview

La Grande is a city located in Union County, Oregon. Its name comes from the Grande Ronde Valley of Eastern Oregon. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 12,327. It is the county seat of Union County6. La Grande lies east of the Blue Mountains and southeast of Pendleton.

History

La Grande was incorporated as a city in 1865, two years after a post office with the same name was established.

La Grande's Eastern Oregon University began in 1929 as Eastern Oregon Normal School, a college for women studying to be teachers.

La Grande is located at 45°19'38" North, 118°5'36" West (45.327188, -118.093239)1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.3 km² (4.3 mi²). 11.3 km² (4.3 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Mount Emily is a recognizable Grande Ronde Valley landmark that towers over the city of La Grande to the north. It often features prominently on logos of local organizations.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 12,327 people, 5,124 households, and 2,982 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,094.1/km² (2,833.5/mi²). There are 5,483 housing units at an average density of 486.7/km² (1,260.3/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 92.92% White, 0.68% African American, 0.78% Native American, 1.26% Asian, 0.90% Pacific Islander, 1.40% from other races, and 2.07% from two or more races. 2.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,124 households out of which 28.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.1% are married couples living together, 9.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.8% are non-families. 32.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.93.

In the city the population is spread out with 23.6% under the age of 18, 16.5% from 18 to 24, 23.9% from 25 to 44, 21.4% from 45 to 64, and 14.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,576, and the median income for a family is $40,508. Males have a median income of $32,746 versus $21,930 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,550. 15.2% of the population and 8.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 10.0% of those under the age of 18 and 9.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
