Labiovelar - Definition and Overview

A labiovelar sound is one produced with the lips and velum simultaneously. An example is English 'w' in 'word' (X-Sampa /w/). It may be characterized as a labial glide with an /h/-colouring. Its voiceless counterpart, /W/, is found in some dialects of English, especially in the American Midwest, so that 'witch' and 'which' are not homonyms.
