Lake Ohrid - Definition and Overview

Lake Ohrid is straddling the mountainous border between the southwestern region of the Republic of Macedonia and eastern Albania, 340 sq km (130 sq mi) in area. The deepest (286 m/938 ft) lake of the Balkan Peninsula, it is drained to the north by the Drin River. Underground springs feed the lake, which is also connected by underground channels to nearby Lake Prespa. Interesting medieval ruins in the towns on its shores that relate to the medieval Macedonian-Bulgarian empire of Tsar Samuel, make it a popular tourist destination in the Balkan region of Europe.

Its picturesque setting and good beaches, fishing and the medieval Church of Saint Naum on the southern edge where two Byzantine Brothers Cyril and Methodius codified the first script for the Macedonian Slavs and named it Cyrillic. The birthplace of Cyrillic alphabet is attributed to these two monks and the city of Ohrid on Lake Ohrid in the Republic of Macedonia
