A distinctive "pagoda" style kiln chimney at Laphroig
Laphroaig (pronounced 'la-froyg') is a Single malt Scotch whisky distillery situated on the island of Islay off the West coast of Scotland.
The distillery was established in 1815 and produces a single malt. It is considered one of the strongest flavored of all scotch whiskies, and is generally aged to 10 years, although the 15 year old variety is not uncommon. The name means "the beautiful hollow by the broad bay". A drop of water enhances the peaty aroma of this whisky.
One benefit of buying a bottle of Laphroaig is that you are granted a lifetime lease of one square foot of land on the island of Islay. The annual rent is a wee dram of Laphroaig.
