Las Vegas, sometimes called East Las Vegas, is a city located in San Miguel County, New Mexico. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,565. It is the county seat of San Miguel County6. It is the home of New Mexico Highlands University.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²). 19.5 km² (7.5 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 14,565 people, 5,588 households, and 3,559 families residing in the city. The population density is 748.8/km² (1,938.2/mi²). There are 6,366 housing units at an average density of 327.3/km² (847.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 54.21% White, 0.99% African American, 1.96% Native American, 0.61% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 37.19% from other races, and 4.95% from two or more races. 82.94% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 5,588 households out of which 33.0% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.0% are married couples living together, 21.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.3% are non-families. 30.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the city the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 13.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 90.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $24,214, and the median income for a family is $29,797. Males have a median income of $26,319 versus $21,731 for females. The per capita income for the city is $12,619. 27.8% of the population and 24.3% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 35.7% of those under the age of 18 and 20.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
