Prior to the height of, as well as being a pivotal factor to, the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Latasha Harlins (1976-1991) was shot and killed by Soon Ja Du, a Korean-American grocery store owner. In a video captured by the security camera in the store, Harlins was seen putting an item into her backpack. She walked up to the counter to pay for it, and was confronted by the woman behind the counter. Latasha attacked and punched the elderly merchant, put the bottle of juice on the counter and turned around to walk away. While she was leaving she was shot in the neck and killed.
