In the video game Chrono Trigger, Lavos is an alien being fallen from the skies in 65,000,000 B.C., causing an ice age. His name is coined by Ayla in 65,000,000 B.C., and is broken up into two syllables: 'La' meaning "Big", and 'Vos' meaning "Fire", so his name roughly converts to "Big Fire".
Following this, by 12,000 B.C., a magical kingdom known as the Zeal kingdom had come into power. Queen Zeal harnessed the power of Lavos, to keep the kingdom afloat, above the frozen wastes of the world below.
Lavos had burrowed deep into the world, directing the evolution of the 'apes', leading them to modern humans. In 1999 A.D., it surfaced, causing fire to rain down upon the world. This devastated the futuristic human society, and by 2300 A.D., humans lived in scattered colonies, trying to survive against the new ice age.
After a party of adventurers witnessed the fate of humanity, they travelled through time and eventually defeated Lavos, leading to the events of Radical Dreamers/Chrono Cross.
Lavos laid Lavos Spawn on Death Peak, which would eventually leave the Earth and head to other planets. On a planet, the spawn would grow in the core of the planet, harvesting the DNA of its inhabitants to create an ultimate being, manifested in the game as the "Lavos Core". The Lavos Core possessed substantial physical and mental powers, and could even revive itself if killed. Lavos is defeated, however, by Crono and his friends.
In the final battle between the heroes and Lavos in Chrono Trigger, Lavos has three different forms. The first form is his outer shell. He takes the form of nine different bosses from the game. Once you defeat them all, he shows his true nature. If you defeat that, you can move on to the next stage. The boss forms that he takes are: Dragon Tank, Guardian and the Bits, Heckran, Zombor, Masamune, Nizbel, Magus, Azala and the Black Tyrano, Giga Gaia, and Lavos itself.
Once you beat this outer shell, you fight the Inner Lavos. This battle is inside Lavos' shell. Inner Lavos has a body and two arms. You have to defeat the two arms first. After doing so, the main body shuts off its defense, allowing you to defeat it.
The third and final battle of the game is against Lavos Core. Lavos Core consists of three parts: a humanoid center, and two bits. In order to defeat Lavos, you need to defeat the right bit. Its defense is incredibly high, unless you defeat any of the other parts. Then, it temporarily lowers its defense, allowing you to damage it. Once you defeat Lavos Core, you go to one of the endings.
Lavos is also the final boss in the sequel to Chrono Trigger, Chrono Cross, except in the form of the Time Devourer. It is a merge of both the dead Lavos and Schala.
