Lawrence Academy at Groton - Definition

Lawrence Academy at Groton is a co-educational preparatory school located in Groton, Massachusetts. It was founded by Samuel Lawrence in 1793 as Groton Academy, and chartered by Governor John Hancock. The school changed its name in 1845 in honor of Amos, Abbott, and William Lawrence, the school's major benefactors during that era. Lawrence has gained renown for excellent university preparation through a curriculum designed to stimulate creative thinking and active participation in society.

The campus consists of 100 acres (405,000 m²) in Groton, Massachusetts 31 miles northwest of Boston and 8 miles south of New Hampshire. It features a mix of historic houses and neo-Georgian architecture. It is close enough to several urban centers for students to take advantage of a variety of social, cultural, and recreational offerings, and it is far enough removed for students to enjoy the quiet character of the New England countryside.

Lawrence Academy is directed by a self-perpetuating Board of Trustees. It is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and is a member of the New England Preparatory School Athletic Council.
