The word legate comes from the Latin legare, to send. The broad meaning is a person sent as a representative of another person. There are several uses for this word:
- A legate is a member of a diplomatic embassy.
- In Roman times, a legate was an official assistant to a general or governor of a province.
- Papal legate is a messenger from the Holy See to the nations. The highest rank of a legate is Legate a latere, who had to be in the rank of a cardinal.
