Lexington Avenue - Definition and Overview |
Lexington Avenue is an avenue on the East Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City that carries southbound one-way traffic from East 131st Street to Gramercy Park at East 21st Street. Along its 5.5 mile (8.9 km), 110-block route, Lexington Avenue runs through Harlem, Carnegie Hill, the Upper East Side, Midtown, and Murray Hill. Parellel to Lexington Avenue to its west lies Park Avenue and Third Avenue runs to its east. New Yorkers often abbreviate the name of Lexington Avenue as "Lex."
Lexington Avenue is named for the 1775 Battle of Lexington, the first battle of the American Revolutionary War. South of Gramercy Park, the avenue continues as Irving Place until East 14th Street.
The 4,5 and 6 lines of the New York Subway, also known as the Lexington Avenue Express (Lines 4 and 5) and the Lexington Avenue Local (Line 6), run directly beneath Lexington Avenue from the 51st Street station through to the 125th Street station.
