Ligures Ligures

Ligures - Definition and Overview

The Ligurian language was spoken in pre-Roman times by an ancient people of north-western Italy known as Ligures. Very little is known about this language which is believed to have been Indo-European.

Ligurian is also the name given to a Romance language currently spoken in Liguria, a region of Italy, and in Monaco.

It has been revived in Monaco as the Monegasque language. It is taught in schools and it has been suggested that 17% of the population Monaco speaks it. The ISO 639-2 code for this language is roa.

Is generally called Xeneixe, which stands also for the people of Liguria, and in some contexts for any northern Italian, as is common in South America.
