 Limburg (Belgium) - Definition

Limburg is the easternmost province of Flanders, one of the three regions of Belgium, and is located west of the Meuse river. It borders on (clockwise from the North) the Netherlands and the Belgian provinces of Liège, Flemish Brabant and Antwerp. Its capital is Hasselt. It has a surface area of 2414 km² and is divided into three administrative districts (arrondissementen in Dutch) which contain 44 municipalities.

Limburg is crossed by the Albert Canal, and has historically been a major coal-mining area. Most of Limburg was included in the prince-bishopric of Liège until 1792, and was part of the Dutch province of Limburg from 1815-1839.

In 't Bronsgroen Eikenhout is the "official" anthem of the region of Limburg, both in Belgium and the Netherlands.
